UBS shakes up flagship wealth business with new unit, memo says
ZURICH (Reuters) -UBS is shaking up its wealth-management arm, the bank's flagship business, to boost its offerings to ultra-rich clients, the division's new co-leaders said in their first internal memo sent on Thursday and seen by Reuters. UBS will create a new unit from July 1, named GWM Solutions, to integrate various client offerings, such as investment management, lending, family and institutional wealth management and alternative investments, the memo from Rob Karofsky and Iqbal Khan said. The unit will be led by former Credit Suisse banker Yves-Alain Sommerhalder who will be based in Zurich and New York and report to Karofsky and Khan.

The brokerage had filed claims with the NYSE to compensate it for these losses, but the exchange denied its ask, Interactive said. Outages caused by software and hardware malfunction have become common as trading moved from floors and pits to electronic systems, but glitches can roil markets and frustrate investors. Interactive said its losses stemmed from an attempt by its clients to take advantage of the massive drop in Berkshire's stock price.

Japan authorities on high alert against rapid yen decline, says top currency diplomat
TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese authorities were "seriously concerned and on high alert" about the yen's rapid decline, said the country's top currency diplomat Masato Kanda, escalating warnings as the currency languished at its weakest level in almost 40 years. "It is generally accepted that the current weakness in the yen is not necessarily justified, therefore believed to be driven by speculators," Kanda, vice finance minister for international affairs, told reporters on Wednesday. The weak yen has become a headache for Japanese policymakers by boosting the cost of imported raw materials, pushing up inflation and hurting consumption.

Fed's Bostic says inflation moving in 'right direction,' sees one Q4 rate cut
Inflation in the U.S. "appears to be narrowing" and that should allow the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates later this year, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said in a policy essay released on Thursday. After concern that inflation might stall at an elevated level, Bostic said recent data point to renewed progress, including the fact that the share of goods and services increasing at a greater than 5% annual rate had dipped below 20% - more akin to where it was before the COVID-19 pandemic and similar to the share seen when inflation was slowing fast last year. "It's moving in the right direction," Bostic said of a metric he has singled out as one of his touchstones for the U.S. central bank's battle against inflation that spiked to a 40-year high in 2022.
