Get an Inspection

Since your car is in pretty good shape, you shouldn’t have any trouble with this step. Erin Kemp is a consumer advocate for Bumper and recommended an inspection because it will help make your car look more appealing to potential buyers.

“You want to make sure that your car is in tip-top shape inside and out and getting a professional’s sign-off is a great starting point,” she said. “This way, you’ll be sure there are no problems that can arise during the process and you’ll also have documentation to present to a buyer that can put them at ease. This can give you an edge over other sellers who haven’t taken that extra step.”

Make Sure the Car Is in Great Shape

If you want the most from your car, make sure it looks as close to flawless as it can.

“Thorough cleaning of exterior and interior, paint polishing and interior details work wonders,” said James White, automotive specialist and CEO of Amazing Moves. “If possible, even consider professional detailing. Presentation means everything and makes a great difference in the perceived visual value of the vehicle.”

List Your Car at the Right Time

Kemp said the time of year that you list your car is very important.

“Picking the right time to sell your car could help you get the maximum return,” she said. “Many shoppers are more inclined to be interested in sports cars during the summer and spring seasons, so that’s when you’ll want to list your car if possible.”

So if you can wait out the winter for some cash, that’s your best bet.

Optimize Your Listing

“Be meticulous when listing your car,” Kemp said.

Kemp went on to recommend you include as many details as you can about the car and have high-quality photos. “Especially if you plan to list your car online, you want to make sure the buyer gets a good first impression. If they’re left with questions after reading your listing, they may just move on to the next option.”

White added to underscore any cool features your car might have.

“If the sports car you’re selling is similarly decked out with add-ons, has undergone an upgrade or just features rare options, be sure to highlight those in your listing,” he said. “The uniqueness helps share a distinction from the rest of the cars in the market and ultimately is a reason you’re able to command a higher fair market value.”

Use Multiple Sites To Advertise Your Car

“Important online marketplaces are Autotrader, Cars.com and Craigslist,” White said. “Along with that, make sure to list your car for sale on enthusiast forums and social media groups related to sports cars. Greater reach to the right audience increases the probability of finding motivated buyers, who may tend to pay top dollar for your vehicle.”

Field Multiple Offers

Kemp said it’s important not to settle for the first offer you receive. “There are several different routes you can take when selling a sports car, so it can be beneficial to see what different buyers or dealerships would be willing to offer.”

Kemp said to screen your offers thoroughly to protect yourself from scammers.
