This Revamped Robert Byrd-Designed Home in L.A. Can Be Yours for $3.5 Million

Around nine decades ago, noted Los Angeles architect Robert Byrd purchased several empty lots on a prime stretch of road in the Hollywood Hills with plans to create an enclave of homes for his clients. Perched high above the Sunset Strip and offering sweeping views from Downtown L.A. to Catalina Island, one of these eight remaining gems has just popped up for sale, asking a tad under $3.5 million.

First known as the “portfolio house” and used as a show property where potential buyers could select features they preferred, the classic farmhouse-style spread now up for grabs was subsequently purchased in 1940 by Golden-Age Hollywood actress Lizabeth Scott and fully customized to her tastes by Byrd, who is best known for designing the notorious home on Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon where Sharon Tate was murdered by members of the Manson family, plus Frank Zappa’s rock ’n’ roll treehouse in Laurel Canyon.

Of special note: The place also has the added cache of having been frequented during Scott’s ownership by the legendary singer and actor Elvis Presley, who was her co-star in the 1957 musical comedy Loving You.

Last sold in spring 2015 for $2.4 million and renovated the following year by Chicago-based architect Tannys Langdon, the white wood-shingled structure is nestled beyond a gated driveway amid an almost quarter-acre parcel overlooking Chateau Marmont. Fronted by a single-vehicle garage tucked off to the side and a covered entry porch, the two-bedroom, three-bath house offers 1,800 square feet of MRM Studio-designed living space on two levels boasting rustic hardwood floors, extensive built-ins, and post-and-beam ceilings throughout.

A charming Dutch door opens into the foyer, which flows to an all-white living room featuring a gas fireplace flanked by the original built-in shelving. A sun-drenched dining room connects to the wide galley-style kitchen, which is outfitted with custom cabinetry, black soapstone countertops, high-end Miele, Wolf, and Sub-Zero appliances, as well as a scullery flaunting custom elements like built-in cutlery trays and an onion drawer; and there’s also an office nook and a powder room on the main floor.

A curving staircase heads upstairs, where two en-suite bedrooms include a fancifully wallpapered primary retreat resting beneath a vaulted ceiling and featuring a walk-in closet and a newly redesigned bath equipped with a walk-in shower. Outdoors, the hedged backyard is dotted with azaleas and fruit trees and hosts a kidney-shaped pool surrounded by a sprawling brick terrace ideal for al fresco lounging and entertaining.

As far as celeb-pedigreed homes go, another recent offering is Katherine Hepburn’s former New York City townhouse that just hit the market for $7.2 million. Others have included Judy Garland’s onetime Bel Air estate, which was up for sale at $11.5 million before it was removed from the listings last month, and an L.A. residence once owned by Nancy Kulp, Milburn Drysdale’s secretary Jane Hathaway on The Beverly Hillbillies, which was asking $2 million back in March.

The listing is held by Elisa Ritt of Compass.
