Assistant editors Khairani Afifi Noordin and Jovi Ho jointly won the award with their cover story "Digital does not mean different", a deep-dive into the 2022 launch of digital banks GXS and Trust Bank.
“This is excellent journalism - a big topic handled very deftly, excellent sources and insights, written in a highly-engaging way and I would think a must-read on the digital banking landscape in Singapore. Well done to the authors," states the judging panel, which consists of Feon Ang, managing director at LinkedIn, Asia Pacific; Clive Horwood, managing editor and deputy executive officer at OMFIF; Laura Deal Lacey, executive director for Global Markets, Milken Institute and last but not least, Samuel Rhee, chairman & CIO at Endowus.
Assistant editor Samantha Chiew was also nominated in the same category for her story "Audience Analytics eyes reopening boost and expansion into new markets", on the Catalist-listed company.
“Very well written piece, in a sector that is not easy to understand, well explained and very easy to read," comment the judges.
For the first time since the award began in 2018, a tie saw Ven Sreenivasan from The Straits Times also win in The Hidden Gem category with his story "Samudera and other good mid-cap stocks need some love from the market".
Teo Ai June, Head of Marketing & Communications at SGX Group, says the exchange is delighted by the quality of submissions across a growing variety of formats, which besides print, includes video and podcasts.
"This year, we also welcomed works from students through our Special Category, as a form of recognition and encouragement for young talent interested in the world of finance and investing.

Khairani won Story of the Year at last year's iteration of the awards with her cover story on the metaverse, while Ho won the top award in 2021 with his cover story on the popularity of "buy now, pay later" fintech in Singapore and the region. Ho also won The Hidden Gem in 2022 with his cover story on the cinema business in Singapore.
Chiew's story on alternative proteins won the special category Sustainability: Advantage Asia in 2021, while her feature on Food Empire won The Hidden Gem in 2020.

At a media appreciation night hosted by the Singapore Exchange on Sept 5, Prisca Ang from The Straits Times won Story of the Year with her report “Singapore bank bonds more volatile amid fallout, but lenders not hit hard”.
A team at the Business Times, consisting of Janice Lim, Wong Pei Ting, Kenneth Lim, Hannah Kwah, Hyrie Rahmat and Quah Kai Yuan, clinched the Experiential Treat award for their report on “The Rise of Singapore CSO”, while The Simple Sum won the #TheGoTo award.
This year’s special category is exclusively for students, with the theme Capturing the Future of Finance. This award went to Benjamin Brown of City, University of London for his original work “Industry under Fire: Chinese Tech Stocks”.
