Elon Musk opens up about living in space, AI, and more

The Milken Institute Global Conference is underway in Los Angeles, California. The institute’s Chairman, Michael Milken, sat down with Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to discuss space, artificial intelligence, population growth, and what keeps him up at night. Space (00:00:05) Musk explains that he wants “to be a multi-planet civilization so that we have planetary redundancy, such that no single event can… be the end of our civilization.” AI (00:00:21) “It’s very important to have a maximum truth-seeking AI… and a maximumly curious AI,” Musk notes. While “biological intelligence can serve as a… backstop, as a… buffer of intelligence… almost all intelligence will be digital.” Population Growth (00:00:52) “The more prosperous a civilization and the more a civilization feels that it does need to defend against external threats, the lower the birth rate,” Musk discusses. “You should really think of human civilization as being like a tiny candle in a vast darkness, and we should do everything possible to ensure that… candle does not go out.” For more expert insight and the latest market action, click here.

Tesla 'Full Self-Driving' may be an important differentiator in China: Analyst

Shares Tesla (TSLA) are moving lower on Tuesday morning as the company's sales in China fell 18% year-over-year for the month of April, according to the China Passenger Car Association. The company has already been hit with falling sales in China as competition increases, causing the automaker to lower prices on select models. Morningstar Equities Strategist Seth Goldstein joins The Morning Brief to give insight into Tesla's current operations and how the company can move forward. Goldstein discusses the nature of electric vehicle competition in China: "So I think for Tesla within China, they're not in the affordable vehicle market. So yes, there are a lot of longer range, cheaper EVs out there and for consumers who only care about price, Tesla is likely not going to be the go-to choice in China right now. But Tesla can still compete in the high end luxury market on a technology standpoint with FSD. US STOCKS-Wall Street maintains upward momentum, despite Disney earnings drag

U.S. stock indexes rose on Tuesday, on track for a fourth straight positive session fueled by renewed expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates this year, despite declines in Walt Disney shares weighing on overall market gains. Walt Disney fell 9.8%, on track for its biggest percentage fall since November 2022, as a surprise profit in its streaming entertainment division was eclipsed by a drop in its traditional TV business and weaker box office. Despite Disney's drag, the three main U.S. stock indexes were trading at a more than three week high after a weaker-than-expected labor market report last week fueled bets that the U.S. central bank will cut rates.
