Ethiopian Airlines expects to carry 30% more passengers in the year ended June from the year before, its chief executive told Reuters on Wednesday, buoyed by new routes and a rebound in global travel. Africa's biggest airline, however, faces risks from delayed aircraft deliveries and the grounding of some planes due to engine shortages caused by supply chain disruptions, Mesfin Tasew Bekele said in an interview. The delivery problems mainly affect narrow-body passenger jets from Boeing, he said, while the grounding is affecting wide-body aircraft used for long-haul travel.
Brazilian planemaker Embraer is focused on selling its current portfolio of recently developed products, a company spokesperson told Reuters, adding there was no big capital expenditures (capex) cycle in the works. He was reacting to an earlier Wall Street Journal article saying Embraer was exploring options for a new narrowbody jet model to challenge the market dominance of Boeing and Airbus.
Internal studies conducted by Embraer have determined that the company has the technological know-how and manufacturing capability to develop a next-generation narrowbody aircraft, which would be its first in that segment, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Embraer, currently the world's third-largest jetmaker and specializing in regional and business jets, was not immediately available for a comment. Embraer's plans are in their infancy and no final decision has been made but the company has been laying the groundwork, including assessing potential payload and range requirements, the Journal report said.
