Dow Jones crosses 40,000, commodities demand rises: Market Domination Overtime

On today's episode of Market Domination Overtime, Yahoo Finance hosts Julie Hyman and Josh Lipton break down the market close and the day's biggest stories. The Dow Jones (^DJI) closed higher for the fifth week straight, at a record 40,000. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) dipped 0.07% and the S&P 500 (^GSPC) held above its 5,300 benchmark. Hennessy Funds CIO and Portfolio Manager Ryan Kelley and RBC Capital Markets US Economist Michael Reid break down what the Dow Jones record could signal for the overall economy as interest rates remain relatively high. Commodities like Copper (HG=F) and Silver (SI=F) have reached new heights as demand increases. Bloomberg Intelligence Senior Commodities Strategist Mike McGlone gives key insights into the surge of metals and how China plays a critical role. Outgoing Boeing (BA) CEO Dave Calhoun will remain on the company’s board following a shareholder vote. Boeing will seek a new CEO to help the company recover from the two fatal 737 MAX crashes and the detached fuselage on an Alaska Airlines flight. The company is also facing potential prosecution from the Justice Department for violating an agreement reached to avoid criminal charges over the 737 MAX crashes. Finally, Julie Hyman and Josh Lipton break down what investors should watch next week, from Nvidia (NVDA) earnings to the Federal Reserve's May FOMC minutes. This post was written by Melanie Riehl

Market drivers, GameStop, China's property push: Catalysts

Markets (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) hope to solidify gains seen during this trading week and close above recent milestones: the Dow Jones Industrial Average is in a back-and-fourth bout to stay above 40,000 as the S&P 500 teeters above the 5,300 mark. BMO Capital Markets Chief Investment Strategist Brian Belski joins Catalysts Anchors Seana Smith and Madison Mills to lay out what circumstances could propel the S&P 500 above 5,600 points. As GameStop (GME) shares tank and meme stock sentiments pull back at the end of this week, Wedbush Equity Research Managing Director Michael Pachter touches on the biggest competition and headwinds for the video game retailer going forward. The Chinese government has a new strategy to revitalize its drooping property and real estate sector. Yahoo Finance's Catalysts also cover other top stocks like Tesla (TSLA), Boeing (BA) as its annual shareholders meeting is underway, Applied Materials' earnings (AMAT), and Netflix's (NFLX) streaming deal with the NFL. 4 things Boeing shareholders want to see at annual meeting

All eyes are on Boeing's (BA) annual shareholder meeting as a vote will be held to determine whether the company's embattled CEO, Dave Calhoun, will be reelected to the board. Boeing shareholder and Gabelli Funds Portfolio Manager Tony Bancroft joins Catalysts to break down what shareholders want to see from today's big meeting. Bancroft lays out three key areas investors want to see prioritized after leadership decisions: a finalized Spirit deal, FAA authorization for increased 737 MAX production, and a better handle on the 787 supply chain. Calhoun will step down as CEO at the end of the year, and despite mounting criticism, Bancroft says he believes he's done "a great job." "He took over in the midst of two mishaps, and then obviously, on top of that, COVID hit — the worst downturn in commercial air travel in history. And he essentially brought Boeing back from about zero production of the 737 MAX to 38 a month. That's a large increase," he explains. He says that a new CEO doesn't necessarily have to be an insider but should possess a technical background: "Boeing at some point is going to have to design a new plane...I think someone who has that understanding and background to work with engineers could be heavily weighted for the decision."
