The European Union on Monday approved the $14 billion takeover of major American manufacturer US Steel by Japan's Nippon Steel, which US President Joe Biden has opposed.Biden earlier this year opposed the deal because he said it was vital for US Steel "to remain an American steel company that is domestically owned and operated".
** Sony Pictures Entertainment and private equity firm Apollo Global Management on Wednesday submitted a $26 billion offer for Paramount Global but have yet to receive a response as of Friday, according to a person familiar with the matter. ** L Catterton, a private equity firm backed by French luxury group LVMH , said on Friday it had succeeded in securing enough shares in luxury shoe maker Tod's to take it private in agreement with the Italian group's main shareholder, the Della Valle family.
At a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, US President Joe Biden was asked about his opposition to the sale of US Steel (X) to Nippon Steel (NPSCY, 5401.T). Biden responded by saying, "I stand by my commitment to American workers. I'm a man of my word. I'm going to keep it. And, with regard to that, I stand by our commitment to our alliance."
