An imposing waterside mansion nestled in leafy Richmond, once owned by the Fortnum and Mason family, is now on the market for the first time in nearly 40 years.
Walnut Tree House was thought to have been constructed in 1728 and initially served as lodgings for the owner of the adjacent brewhouse, Lincoln's Inn.
Previous esteemed owners of the property include Richard Fortnum, the son of the founder of Fortnum & Mason, as well as the British illustrator Enoch Ward. Richard took over the department store business in 1815, managing it until 1845.
The house is peppered with original features, including columns, stately pilasters and intricate mouldings. There are seven bedrooms, three bathrooms, five reception rooms and multiple cellar spaces for storage. It is believed that the original Georgian building remained as it was until the 1840s, when the two-storey Victorian extension was built. The property then remained intact until it was subdivided at the beginning of the 20th century.
While its current owners have undertaken a restoration of Walnut Tree House, some rooms could do with modernising.
