Profits at up-market wallpaper, paint and homeware company Sanderson Design Group rose 12.2% to £5.5 million in the last six months as US consumers flocked to buy its classic British designs.

The company said revenues hit £57.9 million in the half year to the end of July, with particularly strong growth in the US for its Morris & Co brand, which uses designs inspired by William Morris.

Dianne Thompson, the company’s chair, said management would continue to focus on the American market.

Meanwhile, “challenges abound” in the UK economy, she said, although many affluent customers were still spending.

During the period, the company renewed tie-ups with retailers including Next, Bedeck and Williams Sonoma, and started distributing its Harlequin brand with Perigold and McGee & Co online in the US.

Ms Thompson said: “Alongside continued management action to reduce costs and increase efficiency, we remain confident in the strategy for the business.”
