United adds new summer 2023 routes, citing strong demand

United Airlines (UAL) is adding transatlantic routes to its summer 2023 schedule, citing strong 2022 demand.

"September was incredibly strong, and it was sequentially stronger than August," Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning, said during a call with reporters about transatlantic bookings for 2022.

The new schedule includes service from the U.S. to three new destinations: Dubai, Stockholm, and Malaga, as well as four new markets. In total, the company said, United will fly to 37 cities in Europe, Africa, India, and the Middle East — more destinations than all other U.S. airlines combined.

The 2023 summer schedule, Quayle said, represents a 10% increase in the number of United's transatlantic flights offered during the summer of 2022 and a 30% increase over those offered during 2021, the first summer impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Here are the new routes being rolled out next year:

  • New York City (Newark) to Dubai — daily flights staring March 25

  • New York City (Newark) to Stockholm — daily flights starting May 27

  • New York City (Newark) to Malaga — 3 flights per week starting May 31

  • San Francisco to Rome — daily flights starting May 25

  • Chicago (O'Hare) to Barcelona — daily flights starting May 25

  • Chicago (O'Hare) to Shannon — daily flights starting May 25

  • Washington (Dulles) to Berlin — daily flights staring May 25

  • Washington (Dulles) to Paris (Charles de Gaulle) — 2nd daily flight starting June 2

  • Los Angeles to London (Heathrow) — 2nd daily flight starting March 25

As for flights between the U.S. and Asia Quayle said, "Everything is coming back on line." Two places with notable exceptions, he said, are China, including Hong Kong, where lockdowns prohibiting travel remain in place, and Japan, which recently relaxed rules for travel into and out of the country.

Aside from those exceptions, Quayle said, United's Pacific schedule "is as large as it was pre-pandemic — if not larger."

Still, adding flights to an industry nearly brought to a halt by pandemic concerns and restrictions, and further frustrated as a lack of demand for travel caused widespread layoffs, poses challenges. Between January and July, FlightAware reported 128,934 canceled flights, an 11% jump in cancellations over 2019.

Shares of United closed at $33.93 per share Tuesday, down 0.79% from the prior day's close of $34.20.
