Two sanctioned tankers with Russian fuel oil discharge in China, data shows

MOSCOW/SINGAPORE, May 15 (Reuters) - Two tankers on an Iran-related sanctions list carrying Russian fuel oil discharged in a Chinese port, LSEG data showed.

China has become one of the top buyers of Russian oil and dirty oil products since the Western sanctions went into effect.

Previously, seven tankers sanctioned by the U.S. also offloaded their oil cargoes in China, as well as the vessel NS Consul with gas condensate from the Russian Baltic Ust-Luga port, which discharged at the Chinese port of Ganyu.

Beijing has said that it opposes unilateral sanctions and China's normal trade deserves respect and protection.

On April 4 the United States imposed new Iran-related sanctions against shipping firm Oceanlink Maritime DMCC and its vessels, citing its role in shipping commodities on behalf of the Iranian military.

Four sanctioned Oceanlink Maritime DMCC vessels were carrying Russian oil products loaded in February-March and crude oil loaded early in April.

The vessel Baxter loaded with naphtha at the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk has been drifting in the Arabian Sea since April 5. Its destination is unknown.

Very large crude carrier (VLCC) Anthea with some 200,000 metric tons of Russian Urals crude oil onboard went through the Suez Canal and is currently anchored in the East Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, two others vessels on the sanction lists carrying Russian fuel oil had arrived in China.

The vessel Elsa, which took on Russian fuel oil from Russia's St. Petersburg and Ust-Luga in March via a ship-to-ship transfer near the Greek port of Kalamata, discharged on April 27 at Huangdao Oil Terminal in Qingdao port, according to LSEG data.

After unloading in China, the Elsa is heading to Singapore.

The other vessel, Hebe, which loaded 100,000 tons of fuel oil at the Russian Baltic ports St Petersburg and Ust-Luga, arrived at Qingdao port on May 13 and is discharging now.

A Qingdao Port representative declined comment.
