SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Nvidia is working on a version of its new flagship AI chips for the China market that would be compatible with current U.S. export controls, four sources familiar with the matter said. The AI chip giant in March unveiled its "Blackwell" chip series, which is due to be mass-produced later in the year. Nvidia will work with Inspur, one of its major distributor partners in China, on the launch and distribution of the chip which is tentatively named the "B20", two of the sources said.

STORY: Nvidia is working on a new version of its flagship AI chips that is meant to avoid U.S. restrictions on sales to China. That’s according to Reuters sources. They say the new silicon will be compatible with Washington’s export controls. There was no comment on the report from the company. The AI chip champion unveiled its “Blackwell” semiconductors in March. It’s thought the new product for China will be a derivative. The U.S. tightened controls on the export of chips to China in 2023. It wants to prevent breakthroughs in supercomputing that could help the country’s military. Recent reports claim more controls are likely, with Washington pressuring allies like Japan to impose further controls too. Since the U.S. curbs were introduced, Chinese tech giants including Huawei have sought to develop their own alternative semiconductors. That’s a challenge Nvidia would like to defeat, with China accounting for over a quarter of its sales before the recent tensions began.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) -China surprised markets by cutting major short and long-term interest rates on Monday, its first such broad move since August last year, signalling intent to boost growth in the world's second-largest economy just days after a Communist Party leadership meeting. The cuts to the central bank's key short-term policy rate, its market operations rates and benchmark bank lending rates came after China reported weaker-than-expected second-quarter economic data last week and its top leaders met for a plenum that occurs roughly every five years. Trade tensions are also flaring, as global leaders grow increasingly wary of China's export dominance.

China on Monday surprised markets by cutting major short and long-term interest rates in its first such broad move since last August, signalling intent to boost growth in the world's second-largest economy. "For the Aussie and the kiwi, they tend to be reflecting a more liquid and free expression in terms of the realities currently facing the Chinese economy," said Rodrigo Catril, senior FX strategist at National Australia Bank (NAB).

SALMON-CHALLIS NATIONAL FOREST, Idaho (Reuters) - The only U.S. cobalt mine sits fallow in the northern Idaho woods, a mothballed hunk of steel and dirt that is too expensive for its owner to operate because Chinese rivals have flooded global markets with cheap supplies of the bluish metal used in electric vehicle batteries and electronics. Jervois Global, which dug the mine into the side of a nearly 8,000-foot (2,400-meter) mountain, watched helplessly last year as cobalt prices plunged after China's CMOC Group opened the Kisanfu mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, pushing global production of the metal to an all-time high. The Idaho site, which Jervois bought in 2019, was idled in June 2023 just weeks before it was set to open.
