Singlife with Aviva Travel Insurance Singapore Review 2022

Aviva Travel Insurance Review
Aviva Travel Insurance Review

Most Singaporean men would be familiar with Aviva as a brand, as they’re the life insurance provider for those doing National Service. But what you might not realise is that Singlife with Aviva travel insurance is pretty damn legit too.

I was pleasantly surprised. Singlife with Aviva already makes loads of money from MINDEF. So why would they need to bother with their travel insurance product? Yet Singlife with Aviva travel insurance is actually well thought-out and (more importantly) good value for money.

Let’s have a look at how Singlife with Aviva travel insurance plans measure up and whether they’re worth buying.

Aviva travel insurance at a glance

Singlife with Aviva travel insurance is sold simply in 3 tiers: Lite, Plus and Prestige. Here’s a quick and dirty comparison of the tiers.

How does Aviva’s COVID-19 coverage fair?

As the VTLs have opened up all over the world and you’re planning your itinerary for that holiday that’s been on hold for 2 whole years, don’t forget to check the COVID-19 coverage on your travel insurance plan!

The Singlife with Aviva travel insurance policies do include a generous payout for overseas medical expenses due to COVID-19. Even on the off-chance that you do contract COVID-19 overseas and require medical treatment, you will not have to worry about the cost. Plus, it also includes a relatively decent quarantine allowance.

However, where it pales in comparison to the other travel insurance policies with COVID-19 coverage is its renumeration for a postponed or cancelled trip. With coverage capped at $2,000 for even the highest tier, you might at best only be able to recover a part of your plane ticket – if even that.

Aviva travel insurance promotions

Singlife with Aviva travel insurance prices are pretty average, veering slightly towards the more affordable side.

But if you happen to be an NSmen who has opted in to the Aviva voluntary insurance scheme after you ORD, you get a whopping 30% off, which makes the plans super cheap! That makes it one of the cheapest insurance plans.

By the way, the 30% discount applies to immediate family members (parents, siblings, spouse, kids) too. So if your dad or brother or husband is a policyholder, you can get them to buy travel insurance for you…

If you want to find out more about Aviva’s voluntary insurance for NSmen, we’ve written about it here. It’s actually a very, very good deal.

Keep track of the latest Singlife with Aviva travel insurance promotions on their website.

What’s the coverage like for Aviva travel insurance?

Unless you’re planning a very big trip to a faraway land, most Singaporeans automatically opt for the cheapest tier when buying travel insurance.

The cheapest Singlife with Aviva travel insurance tier, the Lite plan, is decent and provides adequate coverage. You won’t feel like anything is lacking, but your mind won’t be blown either.

However, I think you should really consider upgrading to Plus. Now THAT’s a wow-inducing plan and at a still very much affordable cost. Seriously, a $2mil limit on medical expenses? That’s extremely generous and can give you peace of mind even in insanely expensive countries like Norway or the US.

Singlife with Aviva travel insurance also explicitly covers pregnancy-related medical situations as long as the delivery date is at least 12 weeks away from your return to Singapore. Most other insurance companies are extremely reluctant to bear that risk.

I should also add that if you’re planning to get married or do a bridal photoshoot overseas, there’s a nicely packaged add-on for comprehensive wedding coverage to help minimise the amount of freaking out over your special day.

Does Aviva cover adventure activities?

Singlife with Aviva travel insurance isn’t just for those who are helping to fulfil Singapore’s national agenda by getting married and making babies. Surprisingly, it’s also a practical choice for extreme sports enthusiasts.

The basic policy covers mainstream stuff like scuba diving and hiking, although there are quite a lot of exceptions like mountain biking, surfing and flying fox.

But, you can pay extra to add on coverage for (a) winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, sleigh rides, etc. or (b) extreme water sports. The latter covers surfing, jet skiing, sailing, kayaking as well as diving as deep as 40m(!).

Depending on how serious you are about your sport/hobby, you might find it annoying that you have to pay extra, or you might like the fact that the add-on guarantees super comprehensive coverage for both your health and your gear.

Here’s a summary of common adventure activities and whether they’re covered by Singlife with Aviva travel insurance:

Online claims: Submit your claim through the Singlife with Aviva form for travel insurance claims. You can also check on existing claims through this portal.

Hard copy claims: If you’re claiming for any upfront expenses, like your medical bills, you have to mail the original supporting documents (write down your policy number) to Singlife Travel Insurance Claims, Singapore Life Ltd. 4 Shenton Way, #01-01 SGX Centre 2, Singapore 068807

Things to note: Claims must be made within 7 days of the event or incident. Notice the rather short time frame – the industry standard is 30 days. This is not one for procrastinators!

Singlife with Aviva will acknowledge your claim via email or phone call within 2 working days. If they need further clarification they will follow up within 7 working days. You can also call Singlife with Aviva’s customer service hotline at +65 6827 9933 to follow up.

Conclusion: Should you buy Aviva travel insurance?

If you’re an Aviva policyholder (or have a family member) who qualifies for the 30% discount, then don’t hesitate. Without a doubt, this is the cheapest and most worth-it travel insurance you can buy.

Those travelling to more expensive countries will want to get the second tier plan for a few bucks more. The medical coverage is really tok gong on that one.

For pregnant women in their first or second trimester – or just any woman who COULD be travelling while pregnant – Aviva travel insurance is one of the very few options that will cover your condition.

However, a thing to consider is the paltry coverage for trips cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19. You might be better off with one of the other travel insurance plans with comprehensive COVID-19 coverage that we’ve talked about before.

Consider also buying this travel insurance with an add-on if you’re serious about sailing, scuba diving, white water rafting or other water sports. Ditto skiing and snowboarding, especially if you’ve got a lot of equipment. Do note, stuff like skydiving, paragliding and bungee jumping aren’t covered. So, if you’re a thrill-seeker, look elsewhere!
