Singapore Startup Dropmysite Acquires US-Based OrbitFiles.com

Just this April, Singapore-based Dropmysite announced that it crossed half a million users. Two months on, it has just acquired OrbitFiles, a US-based cloud backup and sharing solution website, for an undisclosed sum. This would up the number of signups on Dropmysite to 911,000 from the original 676,000. OrbitFiles will be incorporated into Dropmysite, and existing products will be further improved to enhance user experience. Now Dropmysite is able to replace the two-click backup process of OrbitFiles, doing away with the need to download an additional program in order to perform backups. With the purchase of the six year old website, it aims to increase the awareness of its services in the North America region. With the conversion of OrbitFiles signups, which are mainly from the United States and Canda, into the Dropmysite userbase, North America is likely to become Dropmysite’s second largest market. Regarding the acquisition, Vinoaj Vijeyakumaar, head of product development at Dropmysite said:

This acquisition will allow us to leapfrog forward in our product roadmap. This move to add more users to the service will also allow the development team to survey experienced backup users to hone existing backup products and to perfect future ones that are in the pipeline. Our current growth is based mostly on first time backup users. With OrbitFiles' established domain and huge user database, we will gain credibility and seasoned backup users.

This doesn't just come as good news for Dropmysite, but also to startups within the Asian tech scene. With examples like these of an Asian-based startup acquiring a US-based website which has been around for years, this definitely supports the argument that Asia is oozing with much potential to produce remarkable results, comparable to that of the startups in Silicon Valley. Congratulations to John Fearon and his team!
