Need to get red wine out of clothes? Remove stubborn stains with this DIY trick.

Red wine stains are notoriously stubborn. Highly pigmented organic compounds found in red wine known as anthocyanins, along with the drink’s acidity and tannins, can create a series of chemical reactions that make removing the stains from clothing and carpets a difficult task. But if you act fast and utilize the right combination of stain-busting substances, you can make a red wine stain disappear from clothes completely, with minimal effort and products you probably already have in your home. Learn how to remove red wine stains with this simple homemade stain remover and watch them vanish before your eyes faster than a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau at a garden party.

Watch the video above to learn how to remove red wine stains from clothes.

How to remove red wine stains from clothes

  • Remember, the longer the stain sits, the deeper it sets into the fabric, so act quickly for the best results.

  • Rinse the red wine stain with cold water before treating it to remove as much liquid as possible. Hot water can set the stain and make it harder to remove.

  • In a measuring cup, mix equal parts dish soap, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda.

  • Pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Use a darker spray bottle if available, as hydrogen peroxide can easily break down if exposed to light or heat.

  • Spray the homemade solution onto the stain and rub it in with your finger.

  • The red wine color should disappear almost instantly.

  • Give the garment or treated area another rinse with cold water to remove any of the solution’s residue from the fabric.

  • Wash the garment with a load of laundry.

How to remove red wine stains on carpet

  • For red wine stains that affect rugs or carpets, salt is another particularly powerful household product that can make that stain disappear.

  • Blot the stain with a paper towel immediately and soak up as much of the liquid as possible from the carpet.

  • Completely cover the entire red wine stain with salt. Table salt, sea salt, or kosher salt will each do the job.

  • Allow the salt to sit on the stain for several hours or overnight for best results. The salt will absorb the wine and lift the stain. The longer the salt sits on the stain, the more effective it will be.

  • Once the process is complete and the salt has dried, simply vacuum it up. Repeat this process if needed.
