Huawei exec rejects idea that advanced chip shortage will hamper China's AI ambitions
A senior executive at Chinese technology giant Huawei on Thursday dismissed the idea that a shortage of the most advanced artificial intelligence chips will hinder the country's aim to be a leader in AI, but said innovation is needed to address the issue. The comments by Zhang Ping'an, CEO of Huawei Cloud, comes amid tighter U.S. restrictions on advanced AI chip shipments to China including a ban on sales there by companies such as U.S. giant Nvidia. "Nobody will deny that we are facing limited computing power in China... But we cannot rely solely on having the AI chips with the advanced manufacturing process nodes as the ultimate foundation for AI infrastructure,” Zhang told a forum at the World AI Conference in Shanghai, a three-day event that kicked off on Thursday.

China and Europe held several rounds of technical talks over tariffs on Chinese electric cars that the European Commission is set to confirm on Thursday, China's commerce ministry said at a regular news conference. "To date, a number of consultations have been held at the technical level between China and the European Union," He Yadong, a ministry spokesperson, said. The Commission is set to confirm provisional import tariffs of up to 37.6% on Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles (EVs), after the bloc accused the world's No.2 economy of providing its firms with heavy state subsidies.

Semiconductor production equipment maker ASML may continue with an expansion under way at its headquarters in Veldhoven, the Netherlands' Council of State ruled on Wednesday, rejecting objections from two neighbours. The country's highest administrative court said complaints that the new facilities would lead to traffic and noise problems were insufficient grounds to stop or alter the project, which was approved by Veldhoven's town council in 2022. The court said that suggestions the company could build its facilities partly below ground would not work in practice because of the delicate nature of the large machines ASML will assemble at the site.
