Ohio Women Accused of Driving Dead 80-Year-Old Man to Bank to Withdraw Money From His Account: Police

The two women lived with Douglas Layman in Ashtabula, and have since been charged with gross abuse of a corpse

Two Ohio women have been charged with gross abuse of a corpse after being accused of driving a deceased elderly man to a bank to withdraw money from his account.

The two women, Loreen Feralo and Karen Casbohm, are alleged to have driven the corpse of an 80-year-old man who they lived with to a bank before dropping him off at Ashtabula County Medical Center on Monday, Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell revealed shared in a release with PEOPLE.

The women did not initially give the hospital information on the man, later identified as Douglas Layman. Hours later, one of them eventually called the medical center with his information, per authorities. The hospital then got in contact with authorities shortly after 5 p.m. local time.

Feralo and Casbohm were then interviewed by authorities and charged with theft and gross abuse of a corpse, as they were arraigned in Ashtabula Municipal Court.

The Ashtabula Police Department says that the two women found the man dead in their home earlier in the day as they were living there with him, before allegedly placing him in the front seat of his car with the help of a third person.

Police alleged the two women placed the man in the car “in such a manner that he would be visible to bank staff in order to make the withdrawal." They then took out “an undisclosed amount of money from his account."

Additional charges are under review by authorities.

Ashtabula County Prosecuting Attorney Cecilia Cooper, per Fox affiliate WJW, called the situation "very unusual," and revealed that the women withdrew around $900.

The outlet also reports that the bank had let the women take out money from Layman's account before, as long as he was in the vehicle with them. Police also told WJW that Feralo and Casbohm were not related to the deceased.

According to WJW, prosecutors said the suspects could face up to a year in prison. A cause of death for Layman has not yet been revealed, and the Ashtabula Police Department is asking anyone with information to get in contact with them.
