Many Americans have felt the significant impact of inflation on things like grocery and gas prices, but now those steeper costs of living are trickling over into people’s summer vacation plans as well.

GOBankingRates recently conducted the 2024 Summer of Savings survey in which 51% of respondents answered that inflation has impacted their summer and travel plans. While it’s a bummer to have to give up on expected or desired vacations, higher prices don’t mean you have to wave goodbye to a summer of fun.

We reached out to travel experts for their take on how to make the most of a staycation this summer.

Get Outdoors

Whether you live close to the mountains, or nearby a lake, forest or sandy beach, there are so many cost-effective ways to experience an epic vacation in your own backyard, according to Richard Campbell, a travel professional and the founder of 10Adventures.

“Everyone has some type of natural landscape worthy of exploring that is likely within a reasonable driving distance where you can discover some awe-inspiring sights on a trip that won’t break the bank,” said Campbell.

Rediscover Your Local Parks and Outdoor Spaces

On that point, Jonas Zook Jr., Airbnb host and owner of Sweden Valley Cabins in Pennsylvania, pointed out that natural parks are a wealth of experiences at a small cost.

For example, near him is Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania, famous for its stargazing and incredible outdoor experience without the cost of travel, he said.

“Whether it’s hiking the local trails or fishing… there are many outdoor activities that are both free and engaging,” Zook Jr. added. “Seek out similar spots near your home that allow you to immerse yourself in nature. It’s a peaceful way to connect with the environment and get some exercise.”

Keep Lodging Costs Down

To keep costs down, Zook Jr. recommended camping to avoid hotel fees, or choosing an Airbnb over a hotel, so that you can prepare your own meals.

Share the Experience

“Another great idea is to team up with friends or family to form a larger group that can then split accommodations and can also carpool to the given destination,” Campbell said.

To Campbell, there’s nothing like setting out into a canopy of trees, breathing fresh air and un-plugging in nature alongside those you care about most.

“The nice thing about it is that a vacation like this often costs a fraction of what a traditional vacation would, making it the perfect answer for your 2024 inflation playcation.”

Create a Home Away from Home Experience

Zook Jr, whose cabins provide concierge-level services to make guests feel special, suggested you can do the same at home.

“Set up a cozy outdoor space for reading or light up the grill for a backyard camping night. Simple touches like string lights or a hammock can transform your backyard into an inviting retreat.”

Themed Movie Marathon

Amanda Wilson, a travel expert at WGN News USA, suggested a themed movie marathon as a fun staycation activity.

“For example, you could select classic movies, films from one director or movies set in different countries,” said Wilson. “Enhance the experience with themed snacks and decorations. It’s an amusing way of experiencing various worlds without moving physically. “

Plan Ahead and Be Budget Savvy

One way to get good deals is to plan ahead, Zook Jr. said. He advised, “Determine your budget and stick to it.”

Additionally, he suggested, “Look for local rentals or experiences that offer more space and amenities than a typical hotel room. This is ideal for families and larger groups, providing substantial savings and more room to spread out and relax.”

Engage in Community Events

Don’t forget to check your community calendar for free or low-cost events. According to Zook Jr., “Many towns have farmers’ markets, outdoor concerts and festivals that are perfect for a day out without breaking the bank.”

These events not only offer entertainment but also a sense of community. By embracing these activities, you can have a memorable and enjoyable staycation that feels special without requiring extensive travel or expense, he said.

Local Treasure Hunt

Wilson recommended engaging your family and others in your community by creating a local treasure hunt around your town’s famous landmarks, parks and other lesser-known sites of interest.

The joys of unraveling clues and discovering a new place or earning a small prize make for a “fun activity both for families as well as groups of friends alike.”

Home Spa Day

You can also try another of Wilson’s recommendations — transforming your home into an oasis of relaxation.

“Get some essential oils, candles and calming tunes to get you in the mood,” said Wilson. “Give yourself a facial, a manicure, a pedicure or take a soothing bath.

“Additionally, you could explore making DIY beauty treatments from home ingredients as well. This is an excellent way to unwind and rejuvenate without breaking the bank.”

Cultural Cooking Challenge

For foodies who enjoy both cooking and the community that cooking together can create, Wilson suggested choosing a different country or culture to prepare traditional meals from.

“You can find recipes on the internet and gather ingredients before cooking them. This is fun because it allows you to discover new foods from various countries in your own house. Make it more exciting by playing music or watching movies about that country,” she added.

DIY Art and Craft Projects

Tap into your artistic side and indulge in different craft projects.

Wilson said, “It could be painting, pottery or upcycling old items. This can be enjoyable but also rehabilitative practice for many individuals. In addition, it serves as a great way of keeping both kids and adults engaged in something productive as well as fun to do with their hands.”

What makes a vacation memorable are the shared experiences, downtime and fun. You don’t have to get on an airplane or drive far to make those things happen. With a little creativity, you can enjoy your summer without straining your finances.
