Microsoft adding GPT tech to employee experience platform Viva

Microsoft (MSFT) has integrated ChatGPT-style capabilities into its employee experience platform Viva.

After ChatGPT went viral at the end of 2022, Microsoft invested an additional $10 billion in the AI chatbot's maker, San Francisco-based Open AI. Since, the enterprise tech giant has sought to integrate the technology underpinning ChatGPT into its existing suite of products. For example, in March, Microsoft announced that it had brought ChatGPT-style capabilities to cybersecurity, through a product called Microsoft Security Copilot. Additionally, Microsoft last month announced that it was integrating Copilot with the company's Microsoft 365 suite of products, which includes Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office.

This announcement builds on prior launches, especially linking to the launch of Copilot in Microsoft 365, said Kirk Koenigsbauer, COO and CVP of the Experiences and Devices Group at Microsoft.

“We're building on the announcement of Microsoft 365 Copilot, this time focused on bringing Copilot to Viva," he said. "We're bringing Copilot to Viva across a set of Viva applications. Copilot in Viva is built on the same underlying Copilot system we talked about a month or so ago."

In a moment where there are a widespread concerns about both AI's future and its present-day risks, Copilot is built to keep users in the drivers' seat and has capabilities beyond what we've come to expect from ChatGPT itself, said Koenigsbauer.

“Copilot is more than OpenAI’s ChatGPT embedded into Microsoft 365," a Microsoft spokesperson added. "It’s a sophisticated processing and orchestration engine working behind the scenes to combine the power of large language models (LLMs), including GPT-4, with the Microsoft 365 and Viva apps and your business data in the Microsoft Graph — now accessible to everyone through natural language.”

Copilot's capabilities appear in various sections of the Viva platform, including Viva Goals, where the chatbot helps generate professional goals, Viva Glint, where it's able to summarize employee survey comments, and Viva Engage, where it helps managers begin drafting employee communications.

Microsoft Viva is a relatively new product, dating back to its launch in 2021, and the company and has said it views employee engagement as a $300 billion market.

Microsoft shares are up about 20% year-to-date.

Correction: A previous version of this story listed ChatGPT as the key integration with Viva, but it's actually the underlying technology, GPT.
