Jeff Bezos Spent Childhood Summers On His Grandfather's Ranch Fixing Windmills, Vaccinating Animals And Watching The Soap Opera 'Days Of Our Lives' Every Day At 1 PM

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, recently appeared on the Lex Fridman Podcast, marking a rare and extensive conversation about his life and experiences. During the podcast, Bezos reminisced about his childhood, particularly the impactful summers spent with his grandfather on a Texas ranch, offering a glimpse into his formative years and the values he acquired.

Bezos shared, “It's a real working ranch, and I spent all my summers on that ranch from age four to 16.” He described the early years as a time when his grandfather was “letting me pretend to help on the ranch,” acknowledging that a four-year-old would be more of a burden than a help. These summer stays gave his mother, who had him at just 17 years old, some much-needed time for herself, effectively providing her with a break, as he explained it.

As he grew older, Bezos became genuinely helpful on the ranch, engaging in typical ranch activities like fixing windmills, laying fences and vaccinating animals. These tasks instilled in him a sense of responsibility and self-reliance, which later influenced his professional life.

A particularly unique and endearing aspect of his childhood was the time spent with his grandfather watching the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.” Bezos recalled, “After my grandmother died, I was about 12 and I kept coming to the ranch, so then it was just him and me, just the two of us. And he was completely addicted to the soap opera, Days of Our Lives.” He described the ritual of returning to the ranch house every day around 1:00 p.m. to watch the show.

Bezos’ grandfather, a figure of immense influence in his life, also demonstrated remarkable resourcefulness and problem-solving skills. He made his own veterinary tools and repaired machinery, including a D6 bulldozer that they spent an entire summer fixing. This hands-on approach to problem-solving, as Bezos noted, was a stark contrast to growing up in a city and contributed significantly to his development.

The podcast conversation provided a rare insight into the early life of one of the world’s most influential entrepreneurs, revealing how his childhood experiences, especially those with his grandfather, shaped his values and approach to challenges.

For anyone looking to invest in startups, Bezos’ journey is a reminder of the untapped potential that lies in these early-stage companies. Every startup holds the promise of being the next big success story, echoing the rise of Amazon from a simple idea to a global powerhouse. Just as Bezos translated his unique childhood experiences into entrepreneurial success, so too can today’s startups harness their innovative ideas and determination to shape the future of business.
