I'm an interior designer, and these are the best colours for every room in your home
The positive physical and psychological effects of using colour in the home have long been established, from encouraging productivity and alertness, to helping you drift off at night. But creating the right colour palette for each room according to its use, layout and access to natural light takes a bit more of an expert touch.
Here, Amy Wilson, interior designer for 247 Curtains and 247 Blinds and a former contestant on BBC's Interior Design Masters, shares her expert opinion on the best colour choices for your living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, dining room and home office.
In the living room: warm pinks and terracotta
'In terms of colour, you need to consider both the amount and direction of light coming into the space, as this plays a key role in determining the right shades to go for,' Amy explains. 'A south-facing room can take a lot of colour, so a lovely dusky pink with a black ceiling will look really striking. On the other hand, if your living room is north facing, you'll notice a lack of light and should therefore choose a warmer tone, such as a terracotta shade.
'The living room is your opportunity to have plenty of fun and let your personality shine through,' says Amy, who suggests painting your ceiling in a contrasting colour. 'Alternatively, if you’d prefer to keep the walls more pared-back, opt for busy patterned accessories such as cushions or roman blinds.'
In the bedroom: deep green or navy
'When looking for colour schemes in the bedroom, the general rule of thumb is to go for something restful and calming. However, this doesn’t mean you should feel restricted to neutral colours. Making your bedroom dark will add some serious drama and keep your space feeling contemporary,' says Amy. 'Deep greens and navy works a treat.'
In terms of styling a dark bedroom, Amy suggests going for heavy materials to add to the sense of opulence: 'Add wooden finishes to introduce texture, and consider layering up some thick drapes in front of blackout blinds to create a real sense of luxury in the bedroom.'
Again, if your bedroom is north-facing, be sure to pick warmer variations of green or navy – north-facing rooms receive very cold light, and the wrong choice of colour can make it look stark.
In the office: calming shades of green
'With so many of us now working from home at least partially, it’s essential to give this space some real TLC. Treat your office as you would the rest of your home, and make it an enticing and fun place to spend time in,' says Amy. 'Consider bringing in splashes of colour through storage and keep the walls fresh and muted. I personally love a sage green in a home office to keep things light and create a sense of calm.'
If you have a WFH corner instead of a home office, consider zoning with green paint. You can use contrasting colours in an alcove or under the stairs to frame a desk space.
In the kitchen: bright white
'I am a big fan of monochrome in the kitchen,' says Amy. 'There is often a lot going on in here, so keeping the palette simple is ideal. A bright white kitchen paired with wooden cupboards and a striking worktop gives a really fresh approach to the space.'
Marble is a classic choice of worktop in white kitchens, perfect for adding texture and warmth that breaks up a pure white palette. Consider too some intricately patterned floor tiles, painted floorboards or a high-quality vinyl to prevent your white palette from appearing too slick or clinical.
To finish, don’t neglect your windowsills, says Amy. 'Dress these with fresh herbs and a vase or wooden photo frame to add some warmth and life into the space.'
In the dining room: hues of blue
Amy suggests going bold and opulent in a room that has so often been given over to homework and Zoom meetings.
'Dining rooms are making a comeback as people are starting to entertain in their homes once again. A return to the beautiful traditional deeper tones of colour in dining rooms will add real sophistication to your home and dining.
'Move away from the obvious reds and burgundies that have become outdated and instead opt for a deep navy blue which will really add a sense of drama and luxury. For a final finish, add some floor length velvet curtains in a lighter shade.'
In the bathroom: pink and greens
'In the bathroom you should keep colours fresh and clean but don’t be afraid to colour match your tiles with your paint colour,' says Amy. 'There are some great colour combinations to choose from here, including pink and green, which is a personal favourite.'
A soft sage green would work wonderfully to promote tranquility and introduce a sense of nature, whilst dusky pink can be quite subdued and feminine.
'Add a touch of glam with gold accessories and dot some plants around the space.'
