Saamir Mithwani became rich in his 20s through investing and selling products online. He believes that becoming rich young has less to do with what you do and more with how you do it.

“It matters more about who you are as a person than what business model you pursue,” he said in a recent YouTube video. “Because I’m going to tell you they all work — dropshipping works, owning an agency works, flipping and selling cars works.”

What makes some young people succeed and others fail is whether or not they adopt the habits and traits that can make them rich.

According to Mithwani, these are the three things Gen Zers should do to become millionaires in their 20s:

Wealthy people know the best money secrets. Learn how to copy them.

Choose Your Friends Wisely

When you’re on your wealth-building journey, the people you surround yourself can make or break your success, Mithwani said.

“A lot of you guys have it within you to become really rich and successful; however, it’s your friends that are holding you back,” he said in the YouTube video. “As much as I hate to say it, one of the most important things you [can] do when you start your journey of self-development and becoming a successful person is cut off your existing friend group. They’re only going to hold you back.”

Instead, seek out people that help you push yourself forward.

“Focusing on choosing new friends wisely is one of the most important traits I’ve seen in successful millionaires,” Mithwani said. “Be able to look at a group of friends and assess, ‘Hey, is this group of friends going to help me achieve the goals I want to, or are they just going to hold me back?’ […] There are a lot of people out there that share the same vision as you, and a lot of people that you can surround yourself with and make a lot of money with.”

Be Persistent

Mithwani believes that persistence is one of the most important traits you need to adopt to be successful.

“It’s not about being the smartest person in the room or being the hardest worker or being the most talented in the room,” he said. “It’s about being the most persistent, and being able to wake up every day and strive for perfection every single day.”

Once you choose your business model, stick with it.

“Pick something and persist — work hard every single day knowing you’re giving it your all and you will succeed,” Mithwani said. “You will succeed if you truly try your best over and over and over again. […] It’s all about never giving up.”

Mithwani said that although this advice can seem “cringy and cliche […] it’s honestly true.”

“If it wasn’t for my drive and consistency at the beginning, I never would have gotten where I am today,” he said. “Persistence is what gets you from A to Z.”

Be Stubborn

While some people may view stubbornness as a negative trait, Mithwani sees it as an essential one for anyone wanting to get rich in their 20s.

“All my life I’ve been a very stubborn person,” he said. “A lot of people — especially when I started my entrepreneur journey — told me, ‘What are you doing? Why are you working so hard?’ Or, ‘This isn’t going to work,’ or ‘You’re not going to build a future selling products online. This is stupid.'”

To be successful, you need to be stubborn and keep pushing forward no matter what any detractors may say, Mithwani said.

“You need to be able to tell people and tell yourself, ‘No matter what, I’m going to make this work,'” he said. “You need to be so stubborn that you’re actually convincing yourself every day to put in the work and grind, even when everything is telling you not to. I honestly think being stubborn is more important than being smart nowadays, because everyone is smart, but no one is stubborn.”

Mithwani has seen this trait in many of his successful friends as well.

“Some of my really dear friends are the most stubborn people I know — but that’s why they’ve been so successful,” he said. “That trait helped them escape the rat race and live this life of financial freedom. […] Being stubborn […] is really what drives you to be persistent, to focus and to actually make the changes you need to make in your life in order to become rich and successful.”
