Gas prices fell at a faster pace in Canadian cities this week, but one Ont. city sees double-digit drop

Gas prices fell faster across most Canadian cities this week, with virtually every urban market tracked by the data firm Kalibrate booking a decline over the past seven days.

Sarnia, Ont., a consistent hotbed of gas price volatility, saw the biggest drop in the price for a litre of regular gasoline between Nov. 23 and Nov. 30, at 12.2 cents. Victoria, Red Deer, Alta., and North Bay, Ont. saw less dramatic single-digit declines.

The average price nationwide fell 1.3 cents to $1.525 per litre.

The recent relief at the pumps is thanks in part to falling oil prices. On Thursday, U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate tumbled below US$76 per barrel after the OPEC+ group announced new production cuts.

Drivers may need those savings if they’re in the market for a new vehicle. According to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, the average transaction price for new light vehicles year-to-date is $52,900. They say that’s a record for the Canadian market.

“New light vehicle transactions have been getting more expensive as a result of semiconductor shortages, the growing share of EVs, a shift to light trucks, and broader inflationary pressures” managing partner Andrew King stated in research published on Wednesday. “These factors together have led to a $10,000 increase in average light vehicle transaction prices over the last 4 years.”
