First look at IKEA's new collection made with artisans
IKEA is to launch a new collection of handmade accessories for the home, celebrating the traditional craftsmanship of artisans.
The limited-edition MÄVINN collection consists of 20 handmade products, crafted from natural, locally sourced materials. In this range you'll find everything from vibrant baskets and rugs, to lampshades, wall organisers and cushion covers.
The collection has been made in partnership with seven social businesses across Asia (from Bangladesh, Thailand, India and Vietnam), and because each product is handcrafted, no two pieces are the same.
'Every item has a distinctive look and rustic feel of a handpicked item, blending colourful splashes with natural materials through embroidery and woven designs where their handmade nature gives its uniqueness,' says Paulin Machado, designer at IKEA of Sweden.
Most of the collection's materials are locally sourced, where the social businesses are located. Selected both for their durability and renewability, the products are made from cotton, over-run materials from denim production, and natural fibres, including paper made from the bark of mulberry trees, banana fibre and jute.
MÄVINN is an expression of dialect from Småland, where IKEA was founded, and means 'having the wind at your back'.
It's the second global entrepreneurship collection from IKEA and marks the first annually recurring collection under this name, although the Swedish furniture retailer has been collaborating with social businesses since 2012. The collaboration creates long-term opportunities and improves the livelihoods for people in rural areas and vulnerable groups.
The MÄVINN collection will be available to shop in store from June, with prices starting at £4.75.
