You can continue to cut rates, researchers tell ECB
The European Central Bank faces an "easy last kilometre" in its fight against inflation and can continue to slowly cut interest rates, two researchers are set to tell the ECB's top brass next week. The paper by Giorgio Primiceri and Domenico Giannone will be the first to be presented at the ECB's annual get-together in a hilltop resort near Sintra, Portugal, on Tuesday. The researchers used a model that decomposes inflation into supply, demand and the effect of monetary policy on the latter to conclude that inflation was heading back to the ECB's 2% target barring new shocks.

Australia's central bank says policy is restrictive, causing households pain
Australia's central bank said on Wednesday that monetary policy was restrictive with the current cash rate causing financial pain for many households, but it could not rule out further tightening if necessary to tame inflation. In a speech on the banking industry in Melbourne, Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Assistant Governor Christopher Kent said interest rates of 4.35% were contributing to slower growth of demand and lower inflation. "We know that many are feeling a painful squeeze on their finances because of higher interest rates," said Kent, noting mortgage payment has already increased to a record 10% of household disposable income.

Taiwan warns against travel to China after execution threat
TAIPEI (Reuters) -Taiwan's government raised its travel warning for China on Thursday, telling its citizens not to go unless absolutely necessary, following a threat from Beijing last week to execute those deemed "diehard" Taiwan independence supporters. Liang Wen-chieh, spokesperson for Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, told reporters the raised travel warning also applied to the Chinese-run cities of Hong Kong and Macau. China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has made no secret of its dislike of President Lai Ching-te, whom it views as a "separatist", and staged two days of war games after he took office last month.
