China's central bank has hundreds of billions of yuan worth of bonds at its disposal to borrow, and will sell them depending on market conditions, the bank told Reuters on Friday, part of a plan markets see as an effort to cool a powerful bond rally. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) will borrow the medium- and long-term bonds on an open-ended unsecured basis and sell them depending on market conditions, as it has signed agreements with several major financial institutions regarding bond borrowing, according to the bank. The official remarks come at a time China's sovereign bonds have performed strongly this year, with yields hitting record lows, as a wobbly economy and volatile stock markets pushed savers into fixed-income safe haven investments.

Credit Suisse's collapse was caused by the bank's management, not by Swiss financial authorities, Swiss National Bank Chairman Thomas Jordan was quoted as saying on Friday. "It was the result of bad decisions by the bank's management," Jordan told newspaper Le Temps in an interview. Skydance Media's deal to acquire theater operator National Amusements, with its controlling interest in Paramount Global, could be finalized by Monday, sources familiar with the deal process said. Parties are expected to work throughout the weekend to finalize the deal before Tuesday's start of Allen & Co's annual gathering of technology and media titans in Sun Valley, Idaho, which Paramount Global Chair Shari Redstone typically attends. Skydance Media, an independent media company with interests in films, animation, television, video games and sports, has offered to pay $1.75 billion for National Amusements, the holding company that owns about 77% of the voting shares of Paramount.

Yields have risen sharply after President Joe Biden's stumbling performance against Republican rival Donald Trump in the first presidential debate last month, which increased speculation about a second Trump win when voters go to the polls on Nov. 5. Some investors are betting on higher inflation under Trump because of trade and economic policies such as higher tariffs on imports, and profligate government spending along with lower tax revenues, which would boost fiscal deficits and U.S. debt levels.
