Morning Bid: Stock rout spreads beyond tech
The global equity sell-off looks set to extend into Europe on Thursday although the region may be spared the carnage in parts of Asia, where Japan's Nikkei tumbled as much as 3% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng slumped close to 2%. Earnings this week from the likes of Alphabet and Tesla have not supported the market's sky-high tech valuations, sending not just mega-cap stocks but all of Wall Street sliding back to earth from near-record peaks. Japan's exporter-heavy equity market was hit particularly hard by a reversal in the yen, which has rebounded to about 152 per dollar from a three-decade trough near 162 yen per dollar around the start of this month.

Japan govt maintains economic assessment, downgrades view on exports
Japan's government on Thursday maintained its assessment on the economy but offered a bleaker view than last month on exports due to the fallout from slowing Chinese demand. "Japan's economy is recovering moderately, although it recently appears to be pausing," the government said in its monthly economic report for July, leaving unchanged the assessment from last month. But the government revised down its assessment on exports to say they were moving sideways.

ZUG, Switzerland, July 25, 2024--Galderma today announced that full results from the phase III ARCADIA 1 and 2 clinical trials in atopic dermatitis were published in The Lancet.1The trials evaluated the efficacy and safety of nemolizumab in combination with background topical corticosteroids (TCS), with or without topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCI), versus placebo in combination with TCS, with or without TCI, in adolescent and adult patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis.1 Results

Thailand car production drops sharply in June, local sales fall
Car production in Thailand fell 20.11% in June from a year earlier due to tighter financing rules and high consumer debt, and full-year production is now expected to be lower than in 2023, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on Thursday. In the January-June period, car production contracted 17.39% from a year earlier to 761,240 units, the federation said. "Stricter measures for credit approval from financial institutions, coupled with household debt that was nearing 90% of GDP, led to a higher rejection rate for auto loans," Surapong Paisitpattanapong, spokesman of the FTI's automotive industry division, told a news briefing.

Asian shares hammered by jitters over Big Tech earnings
STORY: Asian stocks took a hit Thursday amid jitters over the outlook for Big Tech. Japan was worst hit, with the Nikkei index down around 2.5% in morning trade. Chipmaker Renesas plunged as much as 16%, with Hitachi among other big decliners. The rest of the region wasn’t spared, with benchmark indexes in South Korea and Hong Kong both off 1.5% or more. It all followed big falls on Wall Street earlier. The Nasdaq index shed almost 4% after lackluster earnings from Alphabet and Tesla. That marked its worst one-day fall since 2022. Prime Capital strategist Will McGough says U.S. politics is also a looming issue for global markets: “We obviously have the election coming up, which is going to induce a lot of volatility, although it's not going to have immediate impact on the markets. The markets are going to be trying to figure out what the impact of future policies out of DC will have on today. But we can't figure that out until we get more clarity around what Washington DC is going to look like.”One analyst said worries over China’s growth prospects played into the falls in Asia. A surprise move Thursday by the country’s central bank to cut long-term borrowing costs did nothing to lift the mood. Even strong earnings weren’t enough to spare equities. South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix reported its best quarter in six years, boosted by AI demand. But its shares still plunged around 8%. Instead, money flowed into some assets traditionally seen as safe havens, with the Japanese yen up more than 1% overnight.

The storm swept up the western Pacific, leaving 22 people dead in the Philippines from flooding and landslides, and three in Taiwan, with more than 220 reported injured. Offices and schools in Taiwan were closed for the second consecutive day on Thursday and people were urged to stay home and away from the coastline.
