Yahoo Finance Changi Airport sees passenger traffic nearly returning to pre-Covid levels in June
The airport handled 5.12 million passenger movements in June, crossing the five million mark since January 2020.
Singapore Changi Airport handled 5.12 million passenger movements for the month of June, crossing the five million mark since January 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic struck.
June’s figures also came close to its pre-pandemic levels at 88% of the passenger movements in June 2019.
A total of 27,500 aircraft landings and take-offs were recorded during the month, which is also at 88% of the total numbers seen in June 2019.
In June, airfreight throughput fell by 17% y-o-y to 135,000 tonnes.
On a quarterly basis from April to June 2023, Changi Airport saw a total of 14.6 million passenger movements, representing some 87% compared to the total number logged in the second quarter in 2019.
Aircraft movements for the three-month period stood at 81,400 or 86% of the same period four years ago.
During the quarter, the airport’s top five traffic markets were Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand in alphabetical order.
Passenger traffic to and from Northeast Asia continued to show recovery rising from around 50% of its pre-Covid levels in January to 75% by June.
From April to June 2023, airfreight throughput totalled 418,000 tonnes, representing a decline of 10.8% y-o-y. Air cargo demand remained weak due to softening demand amid inflationary pressures.
The airport’s top five air cargo markets during the three markets comprised Australia, China, Hong Kong, India and the US. India has emerged to be among the top five air cargo markets for two consecutive quarters since the start of 2023.
“Changi Airport continues to witness steady growth in passenger traffic, with passenger movements inching closer to 90% of 2019 levels as we close the second quarter. We are pleased to have crossed the five-million mark again in June with the mid-year holiday season. Changi has regained more than 80% of its pre-Covid city links and we look forward to strengthening connectivity to more points in Southeast Asia and China in the second half of the year,” says Lim Ching Kiat, executive vice president for Changi Airport’s air hub and cargo development.
As at July 1, Changi Airport has 99 airlines operating around 6,300 weekly scheduled flights to 148 cities in 49 countries and territories.
For the FY2023 ended March 31, Changi Airport Group reported earnings of $33 million, reversing from its previous year’s net loss of $838 million.
