NEW YORK (Reuters) -Oil prices fell for a second consecutive session on Monday to their lowest level in over a month, as investors looked past U.S. President Joe Biden's decision to end his reelection bid and focused on rising stockpiles and signs of weak demand. Biden ended his campaign on Sunday and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democrat who should face Republican Donald Trump in the November election. Traders took Biden's decision in stride while shrugging off escalating tensions in the Middle East, U.S. fuel distributor TACenergy's trading desk wrote on Monday.

US likely to cut rates 3 times this year as inflation cools, says former Fed vice-chair
The Federal Reserve is likely to cut interest rates three times this year as inflation heads downward and the labour market cools, according to Richard Clarida, who was vice-chair of the US central bank from 2018 to 2022. Any further improvements in inflation data and increases in the unemployment rate in the US will inform the Fed's decision, Clarida, currently the global economic adviser for asset management giant Pimco, said in an interview in Hong Kong. Europe's STOXX 600 regains some ground after last week's battering
European shares closed up on Monday, recouping some of the steep losses clocked last week with technology and financials leading gains, while Ryanair led a rout amongst airlines after reporting a quarterly profit slump. The pan-European STOXX 600 index closed 0.9% higher, coming off a five-day losing run, a streak last seen in October 2023. Most sectoral indexes closed higher, with technology shares adding 1.8%, coming off their worst weekly drop in over three years, as some chip stocks rebounded following the global selloff seen last week when investors fretted over the prospects of possible U.S. trade restrictions.

Fed may be on cusp of emerging from 'elevated' inflation blues
In September 2021, after absorbing three months of price hikes that were more than double the Federal Reserve's 2% target, U.S. central bank staff and policymakers shifted from their more passive tone about inflation and began describing it as "elevated." Triggered after the personal consumption expenditures price index used by the Fed to set its inflation target topped 4% in May, June and July of that year, the elevated inflation description remains in the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee's policy statement to this day, even with the PCE now down to 2.6% and, it seems, still falling. The Fed's policy meeting next week may finally usher the word out the door.

China's ruling Communist Party released a 50-page roadmap addressing long-term challenges confronting the world's second-largest economy, while the central bank cut key interest rates Monday in a surprise move to pep up the struggling property sector. The action by the People's Bank of China was a short-term adjustment that appeared to signal a recognition that the economy needs immediate help to complement the party's broader ambitions of following leader Xi Jinping's vision for transforming China into a “high-standard socialist market economy in all respects” by 2035. “If we are to break new ground in advancing Chinese modernization on the new journey in the new era, we must continue to rely on reform and opening up,” Xi said in a written explanation of reforms endorsed last week at a four-day policy-setting meeting.

Nvidia prepping new China chip in line with export curbs
STORY: Nvidia is working on a new version of its flagship AI chips that is meant to avoid U.S. restrictions on sales to China. That’s according to Reuters sources. They say the new silicon will be compatible with Washington’s export controls. There was no comment on the report from the company. The AI chip champion unveiled its “Blackwell” semiconductors in March. It’s thought the new product for China will be a derivative. The U.S. tightened controls on the export of chips to China in 2023. It wants to prevent breakthroughs in supercomputing that could help the country’s military. Recent reports claim more controls are likely, with Washington pressuring allies like Japan to impose further controls too. Since the U.S. curbs were introduced, Chinese tech giants including Huawei have sought to develop their own alternative semiconductors. That’s a challenge Nvidia would like to defeat, with China accounting for over a quarter of its sales before the recent tensions began.
