Yahoo Finance UK contacted the Sainsbury's press office for further information. A spokesperson said in response: "We have not recently issued a press release about the closure of Argos stores, though we have been transforming Argos, including its physical footprint, since 2020. We regularly update on our progress against this, for example at our latest end of year results announcement and presentation."

The closure of more Argos depots will impact thousands of jobs across the UK.

In February, Sainsbury's chief executive Simon Roberts said it was a "difficult" decision but the business needed to become "simpler, more efficient and more effective for customers".

Sainsbury's has been trying to integrate Argos with its wider business for several years, since it bought the business along with Habitat for £1.4bn in 2016.

In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, it closed most Argos shops on the high street and moved 150 of them into its Sainsbury's stores.

The retailer also previously said that its affected staff members would be able to explore alternative jobs within Sainsbury's and Argos.
