SINGAPORE — Tech giant Apple on Wednesday (17 April) announced a US$250 million (S$340 million) plan to grow its campus in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore.

The announcement came ahead of a scheduled meeting of CEO Tim Cook with Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who is set to take over as Prime Minister in May.

"The new expansion is the latest milestone in Apple's over four decades of work fostering job creation and deep connections with the local community," Apple said in a press release.

The iPhone maker added that it will also provide space for growth and new roles in AI (artificial intelligence) and other key functions.

Construction to expand the campus will begin later this year at two buildings at 12 Ang Mo Kio Street 64, which were acquired in 2022. Apple said those buildings, which located near the company's existing offices, will undergo a major upgrade.

"The addition follows Apple’s investment in upgrading facilities and state-of-the-art labs over the last 10 years, including growing space in its hardware technologies centre by 50 per cent since 2019," Apple said.

Across Singapore, Apple supports more than 60,000 jobs through direct employment, its supply chain, and the iOS app economy, it said.

"Singapore is truly a one-of-a-kind place, and we are proud of the connection we've built with this dynamic community of creators, learners, and dreamers,” said Cook.

“With our growing campus, Apple is writing a new chapter in our history here. Our Singapore teams have played an important role in enriching the lives of our customers — and we can't wait for many more decades of innovation to come."

100% renewable energy

Like all Apple facilities, the US-based company said that the expanded campus will run on 100 per cent renewable energy.

Once complete, the office aims to attain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ) Gold certification — a framework for designing more sustainable buildings.

Apple claimed that corporate operations have been carbon neutral since 2020 and it has run all of its facilities using 100 per cent renewable energy since 2018.

In Singapore, Apple first contracted for clean energy solutions in 2015 with solar panels on 800 rooftops.
