Diwali, from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, is the Indian festival of lights taking place on Sunday 12th November 2023. It is a five-day long celebration that commences with Dhanteras (10th November 2023) and ends with Bhaiya Dooj (14th November 2023). Keep reading for everything you need to know about Diwali, including the best Diwali home decoration and craft ideas.

The festival – which usually takes place between mid-October and mid-November during the Hindu month of Kartika but changes date each year – is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains and symbolises the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali celebrates Rama's defeat of the evil spirit Ravana and his triumphant return to his home.

Although celebrations take place over five days (10th — 14th November 2023), the third day is regarded as the main day.

The five-day festival is as follows:

1. Dhanteras (Day of fortune)

2. Choti Diwali (Day of knowledge)

3. Diwali (Day of light)

4. Padwa (New Year)

5. Bhai Duj (Day of love between siblings)

There are some traditions and rituals that typically take place during Diwali. Communities in India are lit up with shimmering lights and decorated with bright colours (string lights, candles, oil lamps, crafts and Rangoli; colourful floor designs made of flower petals, rice or sand).

The home truly sparkles too, with living spaces decked out with lights and small oil lamps (known as diya). Fireworks are also an essential part of the occasion, and there are feasts galore, with an array of sweet treats and savoury snacks.
