Diwali, from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, is the Indian festival of lights taking place on Sunday 12th November 2023. It is a five-day long celebration that commences with Dhanteras (10th November 2023) and ends with Bhaiya Dooj (14th November 2023). The festival – which usually takes place between mid-October and mid-November during the Hindu month of Kartika but changes date each year – is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains and symbolises the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali celebrates Rama's defeat of the evil spirit Ravana and his triumphant return to his home.
