If you’re in the market for a new car this Memorial Day weekend, then you picked a good year to shop for one. Memorial Day has traditionally been a “hotbed” for great car deals, according to a recent blog on the CarEdge website. It will be even hotter in 2024 because of what’s been happening in the car market.

The total U.S. supply of available unsold new vehicles stood at 2.77 million units at the beginning of April, according to the latest data from Cox Automotive. That represented a gain of 870,000 units from the previous year, or a whopping 46% increase.

The reason inventory is so much higher this year is because sales have slumped amid ongoing economic uncertainty, high interest rates and disproportionately high sticker prices for certain vehicles, CarEdge noted.

The upshot for car buyers is that dealers are offering promotions and deep discounts to move cars off the lot and make room for newer inventory. These dynamics mean you should find plenty of good deals on cars this Memorial Day weekend, including for U.S. brands.

“Manufacturers are under pressure to clear out 2023 models, four months into the new year,” CarEdge noted. “In late April, 300,000 of the nearly 3.1 million new cars for sale in America were 2022 or 2023 models … Memorial Day car sales are the manufacturer’s best chance to clear out the last of 2023’s remaining inventory. Expect crazy deals on these.”

  2. Dodge Durango: Discount up to $3,600 off MSRP. The national deal on a new 2023 Durango R/T with rear wheel drive is good for nearly $4,000 off of financing with Chrysler Capital.

  3. Dodge Charger: Discount up to $6,700 off MSRP. This deal and certain cash offers vary by trim and by location, so CarsDirect recommends seeing your local dealer for deals in your area.
