1stDibs 50 Roster Ushers in Female-led Design Era

MILAN Leading design marketplace 1stDibs’ 50 roster is dominated by women this time around. Out of the 50 designers and firms honored on the annual list, 28 of the groups are female-led, the company said Monday. The international list, now in its seventh year, also features 11 newcomers.

New talents, including Portland, Ore.-based designer Tiffany Thompson of Duett, and Giampiero Tagliaferri, who founded his Los Angeles-based design studio less than two years ago, are named among design legends such as New York-based designers David Kleinberg and Sheila Bridges, Anthony Barzilay-Freund, 1stDibs’ editorial director, explained to WWD in an interview.

Regardless of age or tenure in the business, each member “changed the way we think about domestic space, and they are continually honing the technical and artistic skills that go into creating memorable interiors in ways that transcend the merely easy, two-dimensional image,” he added.

Kleinberg helped Thom Browne and Andrew Bolton renovate their Georgian, Sutton Place town home designed in 1920 by the American architect Mott Schmidt for Anne Vanderbilt. Tagliaferri served as the creative director for the luxury eyewear brand Oliver Peoples before embarking on his own design practice. He now designs homes for tech moguls, art collectors, fashion designers and pop stars.

“They represent the kind of subtle evolution and changing of the guard that naturally occurs in any industry,” Barzilay-Freund said. The company, which was listed on Nasdaq in 2021, posted net revenue of $84.7 million in 2023.

A selection of “standout rooms” by each firm will be brought to life on the company’s website, alongside curated collections of pieces selected by designers from 1stDibs’ offerings, spanning various categories including their New and Custom, Vintage and Antique and Art and Decor spaces.

In 2022, Tory Burch teamed up with online design marketplace to curate a hand-picked selection of shoppable works by female makers and artists, for Women’s History Month. Through the partnership, 1stDibs supported the Tory Burch Foundation, which Burch launched in 2009 to advance women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship in the U.S. by providing access to capital, education and digital resources.

“This year’s 1stDibs 50 list does celebrate 28 female-led design firms (56 percent of this year’s entire roster), reflecting a new age in which women get the recognition they’ve long deserved,” Barzilay-Freund concluded.

1st Dibs said this year’s selection embodies the creativity and commitment to excellence of the larger brand community, which consists of roughly 97,000 designers and architects from around the world.
