Satellite Detects Heat Signature From Volcano in Canary Islands

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released satellite footage on September 20 showing the heat signature from a volcano on La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, following an eruption the previous day.

The NOAA said on Monday the GOESEast satellite captured the “heat signature (reddish dot)” from La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano.

The eruption at the Cumbre Vieja volcano was reported around 3:30 pm local time on Sunday, September 19, and sent smoke and lava spewing out of several fissures.

About 5,500 residents in the town of Tazacorte were evacuated as of Monday afternoon, according to local authorities, while police expected between 5,000 and 10,000 people to be evacuated from areas near the volcano. Credit: NOAA Satellites via Storyful
