‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ shatters 4th of July box office record

Yahoo Finance’s Brooke DiPalma joins the Live show to break down the box office earnings for ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ and 'Top Gun: Maverick.'

- Switching gears here, everyone, the return of the Minions. "The Rise of Gru" took the top spot at the US box office this weekend and shattered 4th of July records. Brooke DiPalma is here with all of the details on that and other movies that soared to the top. All right, what do we know about Minions and how well they did?

BROOKE DIPALMA: That's right. Well, Universal Pictures-- a big win. Big 4th of July. Lots of fireworks for them, taking three of the top five slots for the box office. Of course, "Minions, Rise of Gru" taking number one here. That brought in $125.2 million here in the US, beating expectations of $107 million according to Box Office Mojo. Now, that sets the 4th of July record here, that beats "Transformers, Dark of the Moon" 2011 debut that brought in nearly $115.89 million.

Now, according to chief analyst at box office, Shawn Robbins, he said this is really a major milestone for movie theaters. "The Minions, Rise of Gru" was really the first movie that brought in young children and families alike since 2019. Now, of course, the last "Despicable Me" has been five years ago in 2017. But "Top Gun" also taking in number two and continues to fly to the top of the box office this past weekend. That-- well, the current domestic [INAUDIBLE]
