Emerson Electric to acquire National Instruments for $8.2 billion

Yahoo Finance Live anchors Julie Hyman and Brad Smith discuss reports that Emerson Electric will acquire National Instruments for $8.2 billion.

Video transcript

JULIE HYMAN: We've got, by the way, another deal to talk about this morning on the topic of acquisitions. Emerson Electric is announcing it's entered-- it is going to be buying National Instruments for $8.2 billion here. 60 bucks a share in cash is the per share price on this. You see National Instruments rising almost to that level. This is a 49% premium to National Instruments' close earlier in the year before reports that this deal might happen first surfaced on the like and before the company announced a strategic review.

BRAD SMITH: Yeah.

JULIE HYMAN: So at that point, it became clear that it was perhaps putting this up for sale. Emerson Electric has been pursuing it for quite some time and now has been successful in doing so. National Instruments, by the way, provides hardware and software for engineers and scientists--

BRAD SMITH: Interesting.

JULIE HYMAN: --in case-- it's not a household name here.

BRAD SMITH: Well, we're putting them on the map here and across every household out there. You mentioned the 49% premium on that deal. The deal for Triton and Brookfield Infrastructure-- and this just to give you a glimpse of why these stock prices are reacting the way that they are here on the day-- that Brookfield deal gave a premium of 35%, roughly 35%, to Triton's stock, or at least the previous close coming into today.
