'Cheeky' Baby Wombat Tries to Escape From Pouch

A baby wombat tried to climb out of its pouch in a wildlife sanctuary in Muswellbrook, New South Wales.

Footage filmed by Julie Smith shows the wombat, Indi, stirring under a blanket and reaching up to try to get out of its bed.

“You are cheeky,” Smith can be heard saying as the marsupial grabs the rim of the makeshift pouch. Smith told Storyful that Indi was ready for a feed after waking up.

Indi is a common wombat that was born in late July, according to Roohaven Wildlife Facebook page, which Smith operates. Credit: Julie Smith via Storyful
