Catalan leader shouldn't have been arrested - lawyer

According to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), he should be free until the court resolves an appeal against the European Parliament's decision to remove Puigdemont's immunity, Paul Bekaert said.

The former president of Spain's Catalonia region was arrested by police in Sardinia when he arrived there on Thursday (September 23) and was due to appear before a court in Sassari on Friday (September 24).

The Spanish government has said he should be extradited to face sedition charges.

Puigdemont was subject to a European arrest warrant issued by Spain and the European Parliament stripped him of immunity in March.
