Boeing makes its last 747 amid transition to 2-engine jetliners

Yahoo Finance reporter Pras Subramanian details Boeing's final production line of 747 jets.

Video transcript

SEANA SMITH: Well, Pras, totally switching topics here. Another story that you're closely watching is from Boeing. Shares closing off just around 3 and 1/2% right now, rolling out its final 747 jet. The decision coming after they produced this for just around 50 years.

PRAS SUBRAMANIAN: Yeah, the end of an era, the iconic Jumbo jet, the widebody. When I was a kid, I'd see these planes at the airport, enjoyed flying on them. But now 50 years is a long time in the industry. The final one tonight rolls off the line in Everett, Washington. It's for an air cargo company, which they've been doing a lot of for that 747. It's not so popular for consumer commercial air travel these days.

But back in the '70s, '80s, this sort of brought international travel to many people. This plane could go 8,000 nautical miles, fly 400-- transfer 400 passengers in each flight. This was a big deal back in those days. So it's sort of sad to see the plane go, but Boeing is sort of looking to the future with the 777x widebody jet. Unfortunately, it's been delayed for a couple of years with some new kind of improvements they've added, so that's sort of a downer for the stock. But, you know, 747, this is an iconic jet, and to see it go away, a little sad for the industry, but hey, there's more coming up in the future.

SEANA SMITH: Certainly, Wall Street taking a little bit of an issue, with the stock off just over 3%. Pras Subramanian, thanks so much.
