Investing.com -- A speciality contract chipmaker partially-owned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TW:2330) has teamed up with NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI) in the Netherlands to create a joint-venture that will build a new $7.8 billion wafer facility in Singapore.
The sector's shares were gaining on Wednesday, in line with the broader market as expectations for Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts increased.
NXP Semiconductors and TSMC-backed Vanguard announced a $7.8 billion joint venture to produce silicon wafers on Wednesday, joining other chipmakers setting up plants in Singapore to diversify their manufacturing base. Taiwan's Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp will invest $2.4 billion for a 60% stake while NXP will invest $1.6 billion and hold 40%, they said in a joint statement.
