India's Jio, Bharti Airtel hike call tariffs for first time in three years

BENGALURU (Reuters) -Reliance's Jio and Bharti Airtel, India's two largest telecom operators, raised their tariffs for the first time in three years, aiming to begin recouping the billions poured into 5G technology over two years. Bharti Airtel said on Friday it would raise tariffs by 10%-21%, a day after market leader Jio said it would hike prices by 13%-27%. No.3 player Vodafone Idea, which has been losing subscribers to its rivals, is yet to raise prices.

India's Bharti Airtel buys airwaves worth $820 million in downbeat spectrum auction

BENGALURU/NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India's Bharti Airtel has spent 68.57 billion rupees ($820.80 million), the most among its peers, to acquire telecom spectrum at a government auction that ended on Wednesday, although their combined bids were well short of the amount on offer. Overall, telecom companies bid for spectrum worth 113.40 billion rupees to acquire 141 megahertz (MHz) of airwaves, much lower than the 962.38 billion rupees worth of spectrum on offer, as was expected since firms were mainly looking to renew or shore up their holdings. Bharti Airtel, the no.2 telecom operator by subscribers in the world's second-largest smartphone market, said it bought 97 MHz spectrum that was expiring this year and acquired additional spectrum to boost its mid-band holding, commonly used for 5G connectivity.

India kicks off $11.5 billion spectrum auction; analysts expect lacklustre bidding

India has offered telecom spectrum worth around 962.38 billion rupees ($11.53 billion) for auction on Tuesday, it said in a release, even as analysts expect lacklustre participation from players as they shore up their existing spectrum. The Indian government derives a big chunk of its revenue from spectrum auctions, which award telecom companies rights over airwaves for a particular period. During the previous auction in August 2022, telecom players Vodafone Idea (VI), Bharti Airtel and Reliance Industries' Jio Infocomm together picked up 5G spectrum worth $19 billion to boost capacities in the world's second-largest smartphone market.
