Lloyd’s and five big insurers quit sector’s net-zero initiative

Five big global insurers and Lloyd’s of London, the insurance market, have quit the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance as growing US political pressure and legal fears plunge the climate initiative into crisis. Axa, the group’s former chair, Allianz and Scor, as well as Japan’s Sompo Holdings, said on Thursday they were leaving the NZIA, which is one part of Mark Carney’s umbrella group called the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero.

Insurers flee climate alliance after ESG backlash in the U.S

LONDON/FRANKFURT (Reuters) -A United Nations-convened climate alliance for insurers suffered at least three more departures on Thursday including the group's chair, as insurance companies take fright in the face of opposition from U.S. Republican politicians. At least seven members of the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA), which launched in 2021, have now left including five of the eight founding signatories. Departures on Thursday included AXA, whose Group Chief Risk Officer Renaud Guidée had chaired the alliance.

Allianz posts big rise in profit after year-earlier charge

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Germany's Allianz on Friday posted a big rise in first-quarter net profit, rebounding after taking charges a year ago for a U.S. funds scandal. The quarterly jump in profit of 329% fell short of analyst expectations, however, and was damped in part by weakness in Allianz's asset management division, which saw lower revenues and operating profit. For the group as a whole, net profit attributable to shareholders was 2.032 billion euros ($2.24 billion) in the three months through March, compared with 474 million euros a year earlier.

UniCredit fails to win support for pay policy from investor Allianz's funds

Funds managed by German insurer Allianz failed to back the Italian bank's new remuneration policy and pay packages awarded in 2022 at last month's general meeting, a document showed. Minutes of the UniCredit annual shareholder meeting showed that the funds run by Allianz had abstained in both votes. Allianz, which is itself the second-biggest shareholder in UniCredit, had backed the company policy.

Allianz considers selling N26 stake at steep discount - sources

Allianz would still be able to multiply its investment at that valuation, the sources added. "Undertaking discussions does not necessarily mean acting on or consummating these discussions," Allianz said in an e-mailed reply to a Reuters request for comment. Allianz X, the venture capital arm of the Munich-based insurance group, has mandated an adviser to sell about 5% in N26 at a discount of around 68% compared to a 2021 valuation of $9 billion, the FT report said, citing sources.

Germany's Allianz does not intend to renew Nord Stream 1 policy

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -German insurance company Allianz said on Wednesday it does not intend to renew a policy for the Nord Stream 1 project when it expires in late 2023. Allianz said it was part of an insurance consortium that provided coverage for the pipeline's four European-based minority shareholders. "The policy will expire in late 2023, is not currently up for renewal, and Allianz does not intend to renew this policy," it said in a statement on its website.

AXA lifts 2023 targets as full-year earnings miss expectations

French insurer AXA posted lower-than-expected full-year earnings on Thursday as the rise in interest rates weighed on the valuation of its bond assets but raised its 2023 targets. "The year 2022 was marked by major political and economic events -- the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis, inflation -- all of which have made the environment difficult and uncertain," said Frederic de Courtois, the deputy chief executive, in a call with journalists. The Paris-based company said the fall in value of its bond assets cut 482 million euros from its net income last year, as a general rise in interest rates hit the valuation of the company's bond assets, whose prices decline when interest rates rise.

Allianz swings to quarterly profit in rebound from funds debacle

Germany's Allianz on Friday swung to a fourth-quarter net profit, rebounding after taking big charges a year earlier for a U.S. funds scandal and as a higher investment margin boosted its life and health insurance business. But its asset management division - which includes bond giant PIMCO - saw lower revenues and fees as total assets under management dropped 18% during the year. The bounce-back in profit marked a return to business as usual for Allianz, which has been trying to restore its reputation after one of its funds units, Allianz Global Investors, was dogged with a fraud case in the United States that resulted in $6 billion in settlements and fines in May.

German industry to pay 40% more for energy than pre-crisis - study says

German industry is set to pay about 40% more for energy in 2023 than in 2021, before the energy crisis triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a study by Allianz Trade said on Monday, citing contract expiries and delayed wholesale pricing effects. "The large energy-price shock still lies ahead for European corporates," said Allianz Trade, the credit insurer that changed its name from Euler Hermes last year. In 2022, higher corporate utility bills were contained as long pass-through times from wholesale markets and government interventions mitigated the immediate hit from surging prices as Russia curbed fuel exports to the West.
