The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2%, and the Nasdaq composite lost 0.3%. The Nasdaq composite fell 52.34 points, or 0.3%, to 15,605.48. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 6.32 points, or 0.3%, to 1,980.23.
The U.S. stock market wrapped up April with losses, snapping a five-month winning streak and marking the market's worst month of 2024. This has resulted in huge gains for inverse or inverse-leveraged ETFs.
Alphabet and Microsoft led the U.S. stock market to its first winning week in the last four and its biggest weekly gain since November. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.4%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 2%. The Nasdaq composite rose 316.14 points, or 2%, to 15,927.90.
