Highest paid Indian celebrities for brand endorsements

By Chaitra Anand

A new draft law in India proposes a 5-year jail term and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh upon celebrities who endorse misleading advertisements/products/services.

This has led to a debate over whether or not the proposed law is too harsh and has loopholes that need to be plugged before it is enacted.

While a group of ministers looks into the matter, let us take a look at what Indian celebrities are paid to endorse brands.

One of the most effective marketing strategies widely used by big brands is that of celebrity endorsements. It is a reliable method of advertising as celebrities from various fields greatly influence the lifestyle choices of the common man. While brands get to cash-in on the fame and popularity of the celebrity, the celebrity in turn gets paid huge sums for being the brand ambassador and also gets to keep his/her own brand image alive.

However, celebrity endorsement also carries a huge social responsibility to be borne by the person endorsing the product/ service or brand. In recent times, stars like Madhuri Dixit and Amitabh Bachchan have come under the legal radar for endorsing products like instant noodles.

Even sporting icons such as Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni have been criticized for endorsing various colas. It's no wonder then that these stars charge a whopping sum given the intensity of the responsibility they have to shoulder.

In India, Bollywood and cricket stars hog the limelight and seem to be the most influential.

Let's take a look at the highest paid Indian celebrities, the brands they endorse and the fees they charge for each endorsement.

The figures mentioned here have been collated from various sources and are unconfirmed in some of the examples. 'Charges per day' refer to the completion of the shoot, deal, endorsement of the brand.
