Tech beats oil: World's top 6 firms by market cap in 2006 and 2016

Technology firms rule the roost when it comes to the world's most valuable companies. But just a decade ago in 2006, things were different: oil was king. Exxon Mobil was the world's most valuable firm. There were three oil companies in the top six, with only one tech firm making the list.

But the tables have turned since then. In 2016, five of the six most valuable companies belong to the tech sector, with only one oil major in the list. The age of technology is truly upon us.
