Here’s why his under-the-radar telco is giving incumbents a run for their money

It has recently hired heavyweight CEO Bill Amelio.

The decision of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore to welcome a fourth telco soon had Singapore’s aspirant telcos buzzing with efforts to join the city-state’s telco triumvirate.

While MyRepublic has long been the talk of the town to assume that position, analysts at UOB Kay Hian say ConsisTel’s subsidiary, OMGtel is a dark horse to the fourth telco slot.

OMGtel has hired heavyweight tech CEO Bill Amelio, well known as the CEO of Lenovo, while it has also made earnest preparation to design and roll out a high-speed 4.5G mobile network, UOB Kay Hian said.

“Bill will be based full-time in Singapore upon OMGtel completing pre-qualification and securing spectrum during the upcoming auction in 3Q16. Bill is no stranger to Singapore,” UOB Kay Hian said.

Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian said OMGtel plans to build a comprehensive high-speed 4.5G mobile network based on LTE Advance technology, independent of incumbents’ networks.

“ConsisTel specialises in in-building wireless communications systems and has experiencing installing distributed antenna systems for over 800 commercial buildings in Singapore. OMGtel plans to provide unrivalled in-building coverage using multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antennas for genuine 4G coverage,” UOB Kay Hian said.
