Why this city was the most popular international destination for US travelers in 2017

A report from Hotels.com identifies the most popular destinations for US travel in 2017

London was the most popular international destination for US travelers in 2017, followed by Paris and Toronto.

That's according to the latest Hotel Price Index report from Hotels.com, which teased out trends for US travel in 2017, based on booking statistics on their online reservation site.

Analysts credit the strength of the US dollar against the flailing pound sterling and the city's long-standing appeal among US travelers for making the British capital America's favorite international destination in 2017.

International travel among US travelers is also growing, thanks to an increasing percentage (around 40 percent) of American passport holders.

While Europe was the most popular outbound region in 2017, Canada also saw a three-percent spike in US visitors who crossed the border, thanks in large part to the country's 150th-anniversary festivities. Americans also enjoyed a favorable exchange rate last year.

Meanwhile, the most popular domestic destination for Americans was Las Vegas, followed by New York and Orlando.

When it comes to travel to Asia, Thailand was the most popular destination.

The findings of the report also point to a strong and healthy travel economy, as the price of overnight accommodations rose globally by two percent after nearly three years of price stability.

The one city to buck the trend? London, which saw a dip of two percent in overnight hotel stays.

While inbound travel to the US dipped in 2017, New York was the most popular destination for international visitors.
