Sarah Polley's film Women Talking is based on a horrific true story. The plot follows a group of Mennonite women who are grappling with rampant sexual assault in their community, perpetrated by the men, and must decide whether or not they should stay or go. It's adapted from from Miriam Toews's novel of the same name.
"One of the resonant parts for me was that—the power of language, the power of having words for something that's previously been unspoken, the power of having a conversation come in to the culture that hasn't been part of it, that's what these women are doing," Polley told PBS. "And I think, most importantly, what I loved about the conversation this film is it wasn't just about the harms that had been done. It was about, how do we find a way forward? How do we build a better world? What do we want that to look like?"
At the 2023 Oscars, Women Talking is up for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, though its actors were shut out of the awards race. "I'm very happy today and so grateful to the incredible collective of cast and crew who made Women Talking," Polley tweeted after the nominations were announced
